Stop Limiting God
The other day, during prayers – Pentecostal (and therefore loud) prayers, I could not help overhearing someone asking that God should send His angels to run an errand on their behalf.
That got me thinking. Now, don’t suppose that I interrupted my own (more silent) prayer to think about that person’s prayer. I could not help thinking how she was actually limiting God by deigning to tell the Almighty God how to help her. What if God Himself wanted to perform that help? And now we have asked Him to send His angel. We pretend to know how best to do God’s work for Him. He might accede and send His angel; that is where we receive much less than what He would ordinarily have done if we left the logistics to Him.
In Luke 1:34 (New King James Version), Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” Mary was seeking to limit God to her own knowledge of things. But God was merciful to her. He told her to leave the logistics of her miracle in His hands, that His Holy Spirit would do this and thus. She did and she gave birth to the Savior. I wonder, what miracle has God planned to give you and you are limiting Him by telling Him how to do His work in your life.
Moses too, on the wilderness journey, asked how God was planning to feed an estimated 2 million mouths with meat. God told his servant to leave that to Him. Moses had the good sense to do so and God fed them with meat for 40 years. So it was that quails came up at evening and covered the camp, and in the morning the dew lay all around the camp. (Exodus 16:13). Like the one who was limiting God to His angels in her prayer, Moses had started to limit God to the animals in his care. But Moses said, “Here I am with 600,000 foot soldiers around me. Yet, you say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!’ Would they have enough if all the flocks and herds were butchered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?” The Lord asked Moses, “Is there a limit to the Lord’s power? Now you will see whether or not my words come true.” (Numbers 11:21-23). But by allowing God to be bigger than his senses, Moses witnessed a prolonged miracle. Phillip also witnessed an astounding miracle after God overrode his attempts at limiting the Almighty in the feeding of the five thousand. Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.” (John 6:7).
Don’t limit God when you pray. He is bigger than all our thoughts He can use His Holy Spirit or angels or demons or whatever to bring you your miracle. Let Him be God, totally in control. He can multiply five loaves to feed five thousand and still have twelve baskets of leftovers.
